“Snow Cruise” Pt 1 with Allie the Mtn Dog and Nutnfancy

Today’s recipe for adventure: one female black lab, four to five feet of snow with more falling, a good shoeshoe hike in and out, knife and axe testing while setting up a survival shelter, and snowy firemaking in a remote area high in the Rocky Mountains! Taking place again in the “Nutnfancy Knife Clinic” (hey we haven’t been here in awhile), the solitude we achieve in this winter wonderland is breath taking. But the work sure wasn’t! Making a survival camp a reality in these conditions takes a lot work (hard to appreciate really until you do it!). Allie and I simulate a stuck-out survival situation in these harsh conditions and set up a survival campsite (using the portable Coghlans® brand orange plastic tube tent). This scenario was realistic and provided good gear testing opportunities. As I’ve done before, I show a lot of the work necessary to find and process standing deadwood into useable dry firewood with sharp edges that ignite more readily. We fall several dead trees in the process with the Cold Steel Trail Boss axe, Norse Tomahawk (very good performance for weight), and Sawvivor backpack saw and split a few other blades too (like the Dow Coated 3400A Ontario RAT-7 knife shown!). Some may say thinner wood could be used to build a fire but usually it is rain and moisture soaked therefore is an ureliable fire STARTING source. Once your fire is hot and self-sustaining then these unprepared wood sources can be used. Be careful with these bladed tools as they can very …

Thats some pup, good dog there :)
You’re swinging the axe like it’s a baseball bat, the whole point of having a 2lb axe is to let gravity and mass work for you. Guiding the axe takes less energy than swinging it. It’s not special training, it’s common sense and high school science.
@xxrobloxiaxx Him ‘Merican. Texan variety. — Veri (Nutn’s sister)
What nationality is Nutn’ ? just something that randomly popped out in my mind for some reason, lol.
You have a sweet dog, and a sweeter life. Keep on livin the dream for all of us. I really think I have to dump my armchair ways, get out the old kit, and hit the firld again. Wish me luck
Hey Nutn, I was lookin into some collapsable saws for some camping and clearing work, when I went to home depot they didn’t have any sawvivors there, I was dissapointed, but I fould a olding 10” fiskars saw that was only about $12, lightweight and suprisingly well performance for the low price, I would reccomend it as a low cost alt.

How do you train your dog to stay with you like that? i wish i could have my black lab do that.
Great vid, i love these type of gear tests out in the wilds, but goddamn, get that axe sharpened..
Seriously Nutn…. you rock man! I wish everybody that had a youtube account actually had the drive to make such interesting videos. Sure watching someone get kicked in the “nutn’s” is funny every once in a while but great videos (not to mention PREOJECTS) are few and far between. Keep doing what you’re doing man!!!!!
Its fine so long as you’re doing. And the bathroom thing is a bit odd – I wouldn’t want some dude around whilst I was crimping off a length xD
turn on your ratings Nutn, so I can give it 5 stars.
That music sounded very similar to World of Warcraft music :D
love the work you are doing, but i have been out hiking and camping for extensive periods of time and every where i went i have heard from many people that you should never travel alone, even to the bathroom. why do you go it alone?
notches work better when wider, the secord strike at some distance and it will break in kind of ‘boards’
i agree axe work is very energy demanding, but you should try to breath in every hit instead of hitting multiple times and fast wothout breathing. Nice work by the way
Lol, nutn going angryman on that tree. Awesome vid!
Nutnfancy: Great vid! I really wish that you’d do more of these kinds of vids…though I realize that they take a ton of time and effort. I appreciate you doing this for us! Watching you work with the Trail Boss triggered a thought about processing wood. An axe works quite well for splitting (and doesn’t use as much energy that way)…but maybe a saw is the only way to go when doing crosscuts? Course, on big trees choices are limited, right?
Wicked video.

Allie looks cute with that “thing” on her back :D
Hey nutn i think its totally cool that you dont just rule out axe’s or other things but you go out and test them to see which is better and you let us know about it with no BS in there! Thank you
